Forest School is an innovative educational approach that embraces the wonders of nature as the ultimate classroom. This nature-based learning method is a unique blend of outdoor exploration, play, and experiential learning. At Forest School, children and educators immerse themselves in the natural environment, sparking curiosity, creativity, and a deep connection to the world around them. Here, amid the trees and wildlife, we kindle a passion for lifelong learning while fostering resilience, independence, and a profound appreciation for the great outdoors. Step into our woodland haven and embark on a transformative educational journey like no other!
YMCA Forest School, at Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre, grew from a desire to connect children with one another and the Land. Programming allows children time, space, and support to explore the wonder of the natural world. Our outdoor centre, spanning 263 acres, is perfectly suited to support exploration, inquiry, and imaginative play in a natural setting.
We have developed our Forest School program, with the input and continuous engagement of the Indigenous Advisory Circle to Cedar Glen staff, we will continue to grow our programming to give equal voice to both Indigenous and Western worldviews so Forest School can offer safe, meaningful, and culturally relevant experiences for all participants.
Forest School, unlike traditional outdoor education experiences, is not focused on learning about the outdoors, rather learning in the outdoors. Children are free to choose and direct their own play, and are supported by observant, qualified, caring educators.
